OREGON DISTRICT ATTORNEYS
CLACKAMAS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY
WHY DID YOU BECOME A PROSECUTOR?
More by accident than anything else. I wanted to be a public defender but they wouldn’t hire me (1980) and so there was an opening in the DA’s Office and I got the job. Fell in love with it immediately.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR WORK?
Trying to provide justice to victims.
WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR WORK?
Dealing with all of the dishonest and misleading information that is being published about what we do and how we do it. It sometimes feels like an avalanche and fundamentally wrong.
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU AND THE WORK YOU DO?
They we are thoughtful about what we do and work hard to earn people’s trust. We believe that everything we do will eventually be public and that we should be prepared to explain what we do and openly answer people’s questions about our work.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE THE COMMUNITY TO BETTER UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM?
That we are in fact a very balanced system that only puts the worst offenders in prison and affords virtually all of them many second chances.
DO YOU HAVE VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES IN WHICH YOU PARTICIPATE?
Many non-profit organizations, mostly centered on services to children and families. Children’s Center for abused children, Parrot Creek Child and Family Services for at risk juvenile males, Parents Anonymous struggling parents, Relief Nursery for Clackamas County for parents with young infants are some of those.
DO YOU HAVE ANY INTERESTING HOBBIES, SKILLS OR TALENT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
I have 12 year old twins. They keep me plenty busy and plenty satisfied.
